Captain Alan Lewrie Royal Navy is just discovering the truth of the old adage that "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!" To the Cape of Good Hope where French cruisers prowl where a British circus and theatrical troupe joins the convoy just teeming with tempting female acrobats nubile young bareback riders and alluring "actresses" like the seductive but deadly archer Eudoxia Durschenko! ‘The Horrid Popish Plot’: Roger L’Estrange and the Circulation of Political Discourse in Late Seventeenth-Century London $100 The Popish plot was an alleged Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II and re-introduce the Catholic faith to England. Despite it being a fiction, belief in the plot became widespread and many innocent Catholics were sent to their deaths.Moving away from the focus of recent histories of the plot, which remain predominately in the realms of parliamentary discussion, courts of law and the councils of the King, this volume considers how details of the plot circulated more broadly. It investigates the many media used, primarily print, but also manuscript and word of mouth, for instance in books, pamphlets, newspapers, and ballads. The most prolific commentator on the Popish plot was Roger L’Estrange, the press censor during the reigns of Charles II and James II. L’Estrange was interested in the working of the London book trade at this time, and as one who did not believe there was a Popish plot, wrote prolifically in order publicly to cast doubt upon it. L’Estrange’s writings provide us with valuable insights into the production, dissemination, and reception of political opinion in this period.Drawing on the latest insights of literary studies, political history, and the history of the book and reading this volume will further understanding in how belief in such an extraordinary plot took hold amongst so many. |

Excerpt: Rzeszów – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Rzeszów is located on both sides of the Wisok river. It is located in the heartland of the Sandomierska valley. Rzeszów is also the capital of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, and seat of the Rzeszów County. Mikoaj Spytek Ligza.Rzeszów is located on an important trade route from Silesia and Lesser Poland (Maopolska) to Ruthenia.. This route was one which Atilla the Hun took on his way to conquer Asia in the 5th century and, according to legend, Atilla was buried in Przemyl. Rzeszów became a town in 1354, when the Polish king, Casimir III the Great, gave it city rights (Magdeburg rights). At the time it was a remote Ruthenian settlement. At the beginning of the 15th century the town was destroyed by fire. It grew rapidly in the 16th century when the local overlord Mikoaj Spytek Ligza (c. 15621637) commissioned a church and fortified castle. Subsequently ownership of Rzeszów passed to the Lubomirski, one of the most important noble families in Poland at the time. Besides having a famous annual market, Rzeszów remained only another city on the trade route to Hungary. In 1658 Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski established the Piarist school, the second secondary school in Poland. During the 19th century Rzeszów began to lose significance in favour of Przemyl. Development of Rzeszów started when in 1937 military industry was located in the city: Pastwowe Zakady Lotnicze, producing aircraft engines, and a cannon factory a branch of Hipolit Cegielski factory (see: Central Industrial Area). Until on the outbreak of World War II the Jews of Rzeszów numbered 14,000, more than one-third of the total population. The town was occupied by the German Army on 10 September |

It was named ‘Bridewell’ after the Bridewell Palace , which during the 16th century had become one of the City of London ‘s most important prisons.Next-door was another prison, the New Prison , built in around 1617. The company received trading privileges for the Far East for a period of 18 years. On 1 June 1604, the French king Henry IV had already issued letter patents to Dieppe merchants to form the Dieppe Company , giving them exclusive rights to Asian trade for 15 years, but no ships were finally sent. Other cities such as Rouen moanouevered to obtain trading rights. In 1615, the regent Marie de Médicis incorporated the merchants of Dieppe and other harbours to found the Company of the Moluccas. In 1616, two expeditions were to Asia from Honfleur in Normandy : three ships left for India , and two ships for Bantam . One ship returned from Bantam in 1617 with a small |

Excerpt: Treaty of Stuhmsdorf – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Commemorative medal made in Poland after the Treaty The Polish side was not unified. King Wadysaw IV Vasa of Poland, from the Swedish House of Vasa, wanted to regain the Swedish crown, which had been held and then lost by his father Sigismund III Vasa. As this was a daunting task, his less ambitious motivations were to gain fame and strengthen his position in the commonwealth, where Golden Liberties made the king’s position among the weakest in Europe. He hoped these goals would be achievable during the war and argued that the commonwealth could gain more by warring with Sweden; however, he was also not averse to peaceful resolution if it were to give him what he wanted. He thought the negotiations gave him the opportunity to trade his right to the Swedish crown for a hereditary claim to one of the regained lands (he was supported by the primate of Poland, Jan Wyk), and entrusted this matter to the Prussian mediators. The szlachta (Polish nobility) advisors to Wadysaw, representing the Polish pa… More: |

Chapters: 1706 Treaties, States and Territories Established in 1706, Treaty of Union, Treaty of Altranstädt, Stolberg-Rossla. Not illustrated. Excerpt: constituent countries of the United Kingdom The Treaty of Union is the name given to the agreement that led to the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the political union of England (including Wales) and Scotland, that took effect on 1 May 1707. The details of the Treaty were agreed on 22 July 1706, leading to Acts of Union being passed by the separate parliaments of England and Scotland. The idea of uniting the two sovereign states had been around since the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne from his double first cousin twice removed, Queen Elizabeth I. Three previous attempts to unite the two countries by Acts of Parliament, in 1606, 1667, and 1689 were unsuccessful, though the political and economic circumstances at the start of the 18th century were such that the political establishments supported the idea, though it was deeply unpopular among the Scottish population at large. The Treaty consisted of 25 articles. Article 1 provided for the new United Kingdom to be named Great Britain. Article 2 provided for the succession of the House of Hanover, and for Protestant succession as set out in the English Act of Settlement. Article 3 provide for the creation of the one, unified, parliament of Great Britain. Articles 418 dealt with aspects of trade, movement, taxes, regulation etc to ensure equal treatment for all subjects of the new United Kingdom. Article 16 required the introduction of a common currency for Great Britain, subsequently effected through the 1707-1710 Scottish recoinage. Article 19 provided for the continuation of Scotl… More: |

A Brief History of the Vikings $15.95 Between the eighth and eleventh centuries, the Vikings surged from their Scandinavian homeland to trade and raid along the coasts of Europe. Their influence extended from Newfoundland to Baghdad, their battles were as far-flung as Africa and the Arctic. But were they great seafarers or desperate outcasts, noble heathens or oafish pirates, the last pagans or the first of the modern Europeans? This concise study puts medieval chronicles, Norse sagas and Muslim accounts alongside more recent research into ritual magic, genetic profiling and climatology. It includes biographical sketches of some of the most famous Vikings, from Erik Bloodaxe to Saint Olaf, from King Canute to Leif the Lucky. Extending beyond the traditional ‘Viking age’ of most books, A Brief History of the Vikings also places sudden Scandinavian population movements in a wider historical context.
