soaring oil price and UK manufacturing?
i was reading a recent newspaper artical, which said the soaring oil price would slow the growth in manufacturing in the UK now. but i am a little confused because as we know, UK manufacturing is relying on its exports, then if the oil price is rising, the cost of manufacturers in the UK become higher and made UK manufacturing goods less competitive. However, in the situation where the global oil price is increasing, i don’t think UK would lose its international market share if the oil price is rising because the manufacturing goods from overseas are more expensive as well due to a soaring oil price. could someone plz tell me about how the soaring oil price slow the growth of manufacturing sectors in the UK?
You may be correct about the market share remaining the same. But the total amount exported would shrink for both the UK and its competitors. So you would end up with the same percentage of a smaller market, due to the higher costs everyone is incurring from the rise in oil prices.
I can envision a country benefiting in market share if the percentage of their costs attributable to oil is lower than their competitors. An example might be a firm that has a more labor intensive, and less energy intensive process to produce a product of equal quality. A soft job market and rising energy costs could provide an advantage to that firm in terms of costs, allowing it to price under it’s competition and win market share.

Prices Candles $98.77 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Prices Candles, founded in 1830, is a United Kingdom manufacturer and retailer of candles. Its full name is Prices Patent Candles Ltd. The firm is headquartered in Bedford and holds the Royal Warrant for the supply of candles. It is now the largest candle manufacturer in the UK. They hold an important place in the technological history of candle making. Prices Candles was founded by William Wilson in 1830, and originally consisted of a candle factory at Vauxhall, London and a crushing mill upstream at Battersea, York Road. Palm trees from West Africa were used for their palm oil, and George Wilson used sulphuric acid to remove the brown colour. Limited dockside facilities at Battersea caused the factory to be moved to Liverpool. In 1840 there were 84 staff, and by 1855, 2,300. By 1900 it was the largest manufacturer of candles in the world. In 1919 the company was bought by Lever Brothers Ltd. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Wage Share $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The wage share is the ratio between compensation of employees (according to the system of National accounts) and one of the following variables: 1. gross domestic product at market prices; 2. gross domestic product at factor cost; 3. net domestic product at factor cost (domestic income at factor cost). In order that the wage share reflects only changes in relative incomes and not changes of the composition of employment in employees and number of selfemployed, often an adjustment is made. In this case the adjusted wage share is: compensation of employees per employee divided by one of the following:1. gross domestic product at market prices per number of persons in employment (this adjusted wage share is also called real unit labour costs).2. gross domestic product at factor cost per number of persons in employment 3. net domestic product at factor cost (domestic income at factor cost) per number of persons in employment. The wage share is a (rough) indicator for the distribution of income between capital and labour. In the short term it moves countercyclically to the business cycle Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Timpledon, Miriam T./ Marseken, Susan F. Real Estate Market UK: Development of Prices in London $24.61 Scholary Paper aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Wirtschaft BWL Allgemeines, Note: 79, European Business School Internationale Universit t Schlo Reichartshausen OestrichWinkel (Department of Real Estate), 20 Eintragungen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Englisch, Abstract: Rental growth in London is rising at the fastest pace in 18 years. Firstquarter sales grew 41 this year. As a result of this tremendous real estate sales increase, there is an eminent shortage of real estate, which leads to price explosions in this sector. Only in October 2006 the prices climbed about 2.1 which is a 12monthincrease of about 25. Renting a six square metre apartment in Notting Hill costs about 800 Euros per month. Agents advertise with slogans like tiny, but trendy and say that these apartments would be ideal for someone with an active social life outside. A property which cost 100,000 about 30 years ago would today cost about 3.473 million, which translates into a total growth rate of 3,473.The goal of this working paper is to figure out why there is still such a high demand for real estate in London, even it is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Furthermore this working paper wants to show external aspects which drive the prices, and opportunities and threats which come along with this price boom. Author: Schmitt, Benjamin Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 28 Publication Date: 2007/11/23 Language: English Dimensions: 8.50 x 5.51 x 0.07 inches |

How to Value Shares and Outperform the Market: A simple, new and effective approach to value investing $39.99 The simplest way to make money in the stock market is to buy shares when they are cheap and make profits when their prices increase. This technique is known as value investing and is the creed of the world’s most successful investor, Warren Buffett. But how do you know when a share price is cheap? This book explains in simple terms how you can develop your own UK share and FTSE100 valuation spreadsheets to calculate share and market valuations. Comparing the valuations to current market prices reveals when shares are underpriced and produces calibrated buy and sell signals. The FTSE100 system, for example, indicates the periods when you should be invested in the FTSE100 and the periods when you should not be. Since 1984 the in-periods have produced 94 times more capital growth than the out-periods.The new valuation system is the heart of this complete practical guide for managing your own investments. It shows how you should be able to double the value of your long-term investments purely through avoiding high commercial fund management fees. Using the new valuation system should help you do a lot better than this and, for example, secure a pension up to eight times larger than that provided by commercial managers. As well as providing comprehensive information about the practical and profitable ways in which you can use the new valuation system, this book is a complete toolkit for creating personal wealth through UK equity investment. It includes risk controls, tax breaks, free information sources and recommendations on the best service providers. In short this book is your first step along the road to financial security. |
