Importance of Pubs in London’s Life
The main action in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales takes place at an inn. The inn keeper plays a prominent role in enticing the pilgrims to tell tales which gives us valuable insight into the life and social standing of the pilgrims. A masterpiece in the field of English literature, this work by Chaucer introduces us to the social life of London, the capital of United Kingdom. ‘Pubs’, therefore, had an existence in the social life of London for a very long time.
‘London’ has a character of its own and has served as a great example for the study of culture and the different classes in its society. A debate exists about the real inhabitants of London who gave this city a posh social life. While some claim it to be the landed gentry, others hold the opinion that it was the so called ‘upper classes’ that strongly influenced the social and cultural scenario of London. It was with their activities in the city for the purpose of business as well as leisure that led to the birth of places of entertainment in London’s life.
However, if we look back in history we can see that it was primarily the Romans who introduced the ‘pub’ concept in England. What they actually had was known as ‘taverns’ that were like popular hangouts serving both food and wine. Taverns gradually faded out and ‘alehouses’ came into the scenario. The next step was the birth of ‘pubs’, which are also termed as Inns, bars and lounges. The concept of ‘pubs’ was not washed away with time from London’s life as it was a part of the rich culture and history of the city.
With time, the importance of pubs in London’s life grew stronger. Pubs, better known as public houses, are places where people flock to taste some great wine accompanied with food and entertainment. Pubs in London are popular commercial ventures as they earn a huge amount of foreign currency. Like in the old days, when pubs served as meeting places for the commoners and high class people, modern day pubs specialize in myriad functions. Some also provide dining and lodging facilities and have turned into ‘family places’.
Nonetheless, they still remain the number one choice of entertainment among London dwellers and visitors from all over the world. Pubs in London serve as prominent business gathering places, social party venues, places to play games, listen to good music and spend memorable moments with your close friends. Pubs in London, however, serve another important purpose. They are the holders of time. The socio cultural life of each notable period is depicted in the interiors of pubs in London. They serve as a mirror in which you can have a glimpse from the past. That is the reason they are like mini museums, a traveler’s paradise. Again, their depiction and constant reference in theatres, dramas and popular soap operas like ‘Rovers Return’ in ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Queen Vic’ on ‘EastEnders’ has made them claim an indomitable existence in the popular culture of London.

A Clock Without Hands $14.95 “I want to turn back the hands on the clock and change it all, make it different; three friends who meet up by chance in an old city and share a beer and laugh at old stories and jokes. But it wasn’t like that; and the clock has no hands, so I can’t turn them back.” [p.171]Alex Carlise has returned to a place he thought he’d never see again, outside of his dreams. As he walks the ochre-dusted road to the house in which he grew up, the memories of his young life in a small Italian town push all other thoughts out of his head: thoughts about the major exhibition of his artwork opening soon in London, thoughts of the myriad things he should be doing in preparation–everything subsides to make room for the warm flood of a time long past. When he opens the door to the now-deserted house, he is suddenly seven again. There is Jamie, his first friend, his best friend; Anna, his first love; and the delicious days they spent exploring the valley and swimming in the cerulean blue Mediterranean Sea. It all comes back to Alex in a way he can neither control nor discern. But the memories are insistent, demanding. Soon Alex loses entire hours to the past, overwhelmed by the haunting memories of a youth turned tragic. Alex remembers the day he, Jamie, and Anna went to their favorite place, an abandoned church far up in the hills. There they stumbled upon a man, injured and sick. From this discovery, a series of events tumbled forth that would change them all forever. Alex now realizes that he must confront the truth about himself, about the echoes of the past that still haunt him, and about the friends whose legacy has meant only devastation.Guy Burt’s vision of youth is piercingly accurate, and his sense of how time can play tricks on the mind is startling. As growing up looms large in the lives of the Carne sisters, Deirdre, Katrine and young Sheil still share an insatiable appetite for the fantastic. Eldest sister Deirdre is a journalist, Katrine a fledgling actress and young Sheil is still with her governess; together they live a life unchecked by their mother in their bohemian town house. Irrepressibly imaginative, the sisters cannot resist making up stories as they have done since childhood; from their talking nursery toys, Ironface the Doll and Dion Saffyn the pierrot, to their fulsomely-imagined friendship with real high-court Judge Toddington who, since Mrs Carne did jury duty, they affectionately called Toddy. However, when Deirdre meets Toddy’s real-life wife at a charity bazaar, the sisters are forced to confront the subject of their imaginings. Will the sisters cast off the fantasies of childhood forever? Will Toddy and his wife, Lady Mildred, accept these charmingly eccentric girls? Clock Without Hands $11.99 “I want to turn back the hands on the clock and change it all, make it different; three friends who meet up by chance in an old city and share a beer and laugh at old stories and jokes. Haunting, eerie, and remarkably assured, The Clock Without Hands will resonate with the child that hides inside your own memories. From the |
