Trades of the Flesh $9.79 A darkly erotic tale of prostitution, murder, and medical science in Victorian England Lydia Ketch is a young woman whose life some would call immoral and shameful. But with the death of her mother and the prospect of the obscene conditions of the workhouse looming before her, Lydia chooses to enter into the "trade" in order to shield herself (and, more to the point, her sweet younger sister) from life’s ravages and give them a chance at something better. Her education, working in the ‘introduction house’ of Kathleen Tanner, has given her some very unusual skills and an income few others could match. When Lydia meets Henry Shadwell, a young surgeon with a passionate interest in biology and in Lydia’s shadowy world the chemistry between the two is instant. Their relationship deepens when Henry discovers that Lydia possesses a nimble intellect. He soon enlists Lydia’s help in his underground sidelines, first as a model for pornographic photography: then as an assistant in procuring corpses for medical experimentation. With the dangers of her own line of work becoming clearer by the day, and her newfound delight in her own sexuality burgeoning, Lydia becomes disillusioned with her life as a prostitute. It soon become evident that her trade–and Henry’s–are even more dangerous than either had imagined. Trades of the Flesh is a gripping novel about the body and its desires, from a precocious voice in historical fiction. |

Excerpt: Events Arts and literature Births Full date unknown Deaths A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at In 1749 a large-scale census and statistical investigation was conducted in the Crown of Castile (15.000 places including Galicia and Andalusia, but not including the Basque provinces , Navarre or the Crown of Aragon ). It included population, territorial properties, buildings, cattle, offices, all kinds of revenue and trades, and even geographical information from each place. It was encouraged by king Fernando VI of Spain and his minister the Marquis of Ensenada , and is known today as the Catastro of Ensenada .The general answers of each place to the 40 questions of the Catastro produced a huge volume of documentation that affords historians an opportunity to analyze the economy, the society, the practices of the señorío system (manorialism ) and environmental data from 18th-century Spain. It is the best statistical register of the pre-statistical age of the Ancien Régime in Europe.Today the word catastro means “register of the properties”, but the etymology comes from “enquire”. In the 18th century there was a distinction between a catastro , which was made by central officers who traveled to the places to enquire, and the amillaramiento , which was made by local authorities. The single tax The Catastro originated in a proposal for a single tax (única contribución ), studied by 16 members of the Council of Castile , the Hacienda (Treasury ), the Indies (America), the Military Orders , five intendentes (first provincial authorities) and the head of the Barcelona Court. After receiving the negative opinion of Councils and the positive opinion of the intendentes , the king saw fit to begin the survey in the interest of the Crown and the |

Excerpt: The 1835 Textile Strike in Paterson , New Jersey , United States , involved more than 2,000 workers from 20 textile mills across the city. The strikers, many of whom were children and of Irish descent, were seeking a reduction in daily working hours from thirteen and a half hours to eleven hours. Support from other workers in Paterson and nearby cities allowed the strikers to sustain their efforts for two weeks. Employers refused to negotiate with the workers, and were able to break the strike by unilaterally declaring a reduction in work hours to twelve hours daily during the week and nine hours on Saturdays. Many leaders of the strike and their family were blacklisted by employers in Paterson after it ended. Background As the Industrial Revolution got under way, the 1830s were a time of significant labor unrest in the United States . Workers throughout the country had over the previous decade sought to secure shorter working days and higher wages, but a many of these efforts and strikes failed. The famous but unsuccessful 1834 Lowell Mill strikes in Lowell, Massachusetts , had garnered widespread public attention and were followed closely by workers in other mill towns. In 1835, construction workers in Boston struck seeking shorter hours. This strike failed as well, despite support from unionists in a number of other cities including Philadelphia , Paterson , and Newark . Inspired by Boston, workers in a number of trades in Philadelphia began a campaign to secure a ten hour day, and after receiving support from professionals in the |

Excerpt: The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic play and adventure novel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy, set during the Reign of Terror following the start of the French Revolution. The story is a precursor to the “disguised superhero” tales such as Zorro or Batman. The play was produced and adapted by Julia Neilson and Fred Terry. It first opened on 15 October 1903 at Nottinghams Theatre Royal; it was not a success. Terry, however, had confidence in the play and, with a rewritten last act, took it to London where it opened at the New Theatre on 5 January 1905. The premier of the London production was enthusiastically received by the audience, but critics considered the play ‘old-fashioned.’ In spite of negative reviews, the play became a popular success, running 122 performances and enjoying numerous revivals. The Scarlet Pimpernel became a favourite of London audiences, playing more than 2,000 performances and becoming one of the most popular shows staged in England to that date. The novel was published soon after the play’s opening and was an immediate success. Orczy gained a following of readers in Britain and throughout the world. The popularity of the novel encouraged her to write a number of sequels for her “reckless daredevil” over the next 35 years. The |
