Excerpt: University of Greifswald – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Map of medieval universities in Europe. The foundation of the university took place at Saint Nicolas’ Cathedral. Up to this day, a number of university events take place in the Greifswald’s largest church, Dom St. Nikolai. The University of Greifswald was founded on October 17, 1456 with the approval of the Holy Roman Empire and the Pope. This was possible due to the great commitment of Greifswald’s lord mayor, Heinrich Rubenow, who was also to become the university’s first rector, with the support of Duke Wartislaw IX of Pomerania and Bishop Henning Iven of the local St Nicolas’ Cathedral. The founding took place in the local cathedral, which was later remodeled by Caspar David Friedrich and his brother and can still be visited today. The founding of the university was made possible by a decree that restricted teaching activity at the University of Rostock (founded 1419). Several professors left Rostock for Greifswald to continue their work there, where Heinrich Rubenow took the chance of establishing his own university. Originally, the university consisted of the four traditional divisions: Theology, Philosophy, Medicine and Law. In Germany, there are only three older universities by count of the years of existence: the University of Heidelberg (established 1386), the University of Leipzig (1409), and the University of Rostock (1419). International co-operation with other institutions of higher education in northern Europe existed already in the earliest years, sparked and accelerated by the transnational trading network Hanse. From 1456 until 1526, 476 Scandinavians were enrolled at Greifswald University and 22 faculty members as well as six rectors came from Scandinavia. This was … More: |

Excerpt: The East India Company (also the East India Trading Company, English East India Company, and then the British East India Company) was an early English joint-stock company that was formed initially for pursuing trade with the East Indies, but that ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent and China. The oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies, the Company was granted an English Royal Charter, under the name Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies, by Elizabeth I on 31 December 1600. After a rival English company challenged its monopoly in the late 17th century, the two companies were merged in 1708 to form the United Company of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies, commonly styled the Honourable East India Company, and abbreviated, HEIC; the Company was colloquially referred to as John Company, and in India as Company Bahadur (Hindustani bahdur, “brave”). The East India Company traded mainly in cotton, silk, indigo dye, saltpetre, tea, and opium. However, it also came to rule large swathes of India, exercising military power and assuming administrative functions, to the exclusion, gradually, of its commercial pursuits. Company rule in India, which effectively began in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey, lasted until 1858, when, following the events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and under the Government of India Act 1858, the British Crown assumed direct administration of India in the new British Raj. The Company itself was finally dissolved on 1 January 1874, as a result of the East India Stock Dividend Redemption Act. The Company long held a privileged position in relation to the English, and later the British, government. As a result, it was frequently granted… More: |

During the offensive, the city of Skopje , present-day capital of the Republic of Macedonia , was plagued by epidemics of cholera . To prevent the outburst of the disease, or, by other accounts, to retaliate for the siege of Vienna , General Piccolomini ordered the city to be burned. The fire of Skopje started on 26 October 1689, lasted for two days, burning much of the city; only some stone-built structures, such as the fortress and some churches and mosques, were relatively undamaged. The fire had disastrous effect on the city: its population declined from around 60,000 to around 10,000, and it lost its regional importance as a trading centre.Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at … |

Chapters: University of Ingolstadt, Dutch East India Company, Sultanate of Maguindanao, Ontario County, Ontario, Pennsylvania Gazette, Irish House of Lords, State of Presidi, St. Juliana’s Abbey, Luccan Lira, Viva Maria. Excerpt: The shipyard of the Dutch East India Company in Amsterdam, circa 1750.The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC in Dutch , literally “United East Indian Company”) was a chartered company established in 1602, when the States-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock . It was also arguably the world’s first megacorporation , possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies. Statistically, the VOC eclipsed all of its rivals in the Asia trade. Between 1602 and 1796 the VOC sent almost a million Europeans to work in the Asia trade on 4,785 ships, and netted for their efforts more than 2.5 million tons of Asian trade goods. By contrast, the rest of Europe combined sent only 882,412 people from 1500 to 1795, and the fleet of the English (later British) East India Company , the VOC s nearest competitor, was a distant second to its total traffic with 2,690 ships and a mere one-fifth the tonnage of goods carried by the VOC. The VOC enjoyed huge profits from its spice monopoly through most of the 1600s. The Dutch East India Company remained an important trading concern for almost two centuries, paying an 18 % annual dividend for almost 200 years. In its declining years in the late 18th century it was referred to as Vergaan Onder Corruptie (referring to the acronym VOC) which translates as ‘Perished By |

Chapters: Mughal Empire, Republic of Maryland, Albreda, General Screw Steam Shipping Company, Sound Dues, Bank of Baltimore, Seaton Iron Works, Principality of Mingrelia, Saxon Thaler, Prussian Thaler, Hanoverian Thaler, East Red Wing, Minnesota, Mecklenburg Thaler. Excerpt: Albreda is a historic settlement in The Gambia on the north bank of the Gambia River , variously described as a ‘trading post’ or a ‘slave fort’. It is located near Jufureh in the North Bank Division and an arch stands on the beach connecting the two places. As of 2008, it has an estimated population of 1,776. History Albreda todayMusa Gaye, a Wolof marabout , founded it sometime between 1520 and 1681. Wolof traders called the island Draga, while the Mandinkas called it Albadar. In 1681, a local ruler, Niumi Mansa, gave the land to the French because his people depended on trade with Europeans. The French exclave was never very large (never more than one factory) but its location was inconvenient for the British, who otherwise had a monopoly on trade on the Gambia River . The British also possessed Fort James on James Island , which was less than two miles away on the opposite bank, and which fulfilled a similar function. There was constant tension and occasional skirmishes between the two powers, with Fort James changing hands between them several times.Albreda was transferred from French control to the British empire in 1857. Today it contains a slave museum .References (URLs online) Fort James is NOT on the opposite bank of the Gambia River.
