What is a good long term investment for Grandson?

I am thinking of an IRA type investment. Something that I can add to over the years. They are military and move, so I don’t think that most of the college plans work well. Suggestions?
Do I just not understand saving bonds? I went on the US Treasury site and it calculated that if I bought a $100.00 bond now, in 30 years it would be worth approx. $158.86 after taxes.

Savings bonds have a very low rate of return at this time due to low interest rates. Gold and silver have climbed significantly, and since they are used in so many electronic products used by the consumer, it is hard to tell if the price can continue to climb at the cost of the consumer.

The one area which people will always need, and want, is inexpensive and fast food. It is recession proof and strong in a good economy as well. Therefore, if I were to make an investment in 1 item, I would purchase McDonalds stock. However, since this is an IRA investment, you can consider putting your money in a mutual fund and keep adding money over the years. Good luck!
